It has been hot in San Antonio this year; but it got a lot hotter yesterday as Couples scorched the field and ran to a 10 under 62 on the second day of the tournament. That 62 ties a career best for Couples and leave him atop of the leaderboard with a 17 under 127 after two days of tournament play.
Fred birdied 6 of the first seven holes on the "new" San Antonio golf course - the AT&T Canyons course at the TPC - San Antonio. He even had a double bogie - but 12 birdes negated that and added to the lead over the other Champions Tour Veterans
So, Why is Fred Couple playing so well?
The concensus from the commentators is he is benefitting from his back treatments from a German doctor. But my take is that he has a renewed vigor from the game that stems from girlfriend and caddy. He definitely has a spark in his eye and some extra zip in his stride.... but the girflfiend caddy has to be part of the excitement
She is Midge Trammel of Austin Texas, and a complement to Freddies classy style and approach to the game.
Go Freddie, Go..... and you too Midge.
The way that Fred Couples is playing is good for the game, good for the PGA Champions Tour and of course Midge and Fred together make for great television. I predict that Fred will win the tournament and Midge wins the TV ratings game.
